Plane crash into Hudson river, New York

A US airways jet carrying 146 people has crashed into the Hudson River in New York, shortly after take off.

The plane had just left Laguardia airport headed for Charlotte, North Carolina when the plane went down.

It appears the pilot was able to land the plane safely into the river, without causing any structural damage.

Eye witnesses say they saw the plane make a gradual landing before splashing into the icy water.

They say the plane did not have its landing gear extended before the crash landing.

A number of nearby passenger ferries are surrounding the aircraft as the rescue operation begins.

The passengers could leave the damaged aircraft by wearing life jackets. No one was injured or killed.
