Slayer Drummer Dave Lombardo Talks About New Album

Dave Lombardo, acclaimed drummer for thrash metal titans Slayer, recently spoke to Ernest A. Jasmin ofThe News Tribune about the band's upcoming albumWorld Painted Blood. In the interview, Lombardo talked about the new material using 1991's Seasons in the Abyss as a “taking off” point: “It has a nice variety. It has a great groove, the whole thing.”

Lombardo was also asked about the album's speed, given Slayer's penchant for writing up-tempo songs:

Yeah, there’s fast and faster for Slayer. What we’ve always had but maybe never really paid attention to is this kind of mid-tempo drive that Slayer could achieve or I could achieve as a drummer. And we focused on that and elaborated a little on that. There’s the fast stuff and mid- tempo; a little slower stuff that ends up fast. I think it’s a well put together record as far as variety goes. ... It has peaks and valleys.

As for the lyrical nature of the songs, Lombardo described “Americon” as a song chastising Wall Street greed and criminality. On a much different note, “Beauty Through Order” is about a Countess Bathory-like figure who would drain the blood of virgins in order to retain her youthful appearance.World Painted Blood is expected to be released later this year.

Slayer, whose last album was 2006's Christ Illusion, is currently co-headlining the Mayhem Festivalwith Marilyn Manson. Supporting acts include Killswitch Engage, Bullet for My Valentine, Cannibal Corpse, Trivium, Job for a Cowboy, God Forbid, Behemoth, All That Remains, The Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, and Mushroomhead.
